The Crédit Agricole Group’s International Desk for the United Kingdom, Ireland and Nordic Countries, based in London, provides support to the Group’s business clients in and around the United Kingdom to help them implement their operations on location, particularly by offering banking advice, opening accounts and providing financing. To this end, it draws on the Group’s business units and frontline local partner banks.

For non-banking matters, the International Desk offers the support of local law, accounting offices and its partners as well as expertise in business internationalisation.

The Brexit negotiations over the past three years have created a climate of uncertainty among companies waiting to see whether an agreement with the European Union materialises or not. Nevertheless, the United Kingdom is still attractive to investors. The country enjoys nearly full employment, consumption is still sustained, and the fall of the pound sterling at the expense of the euro or the dollar may have whetted the appetite of international buyers. The continuing favourable business environment has led to the UK being ranked 9th in the World Bank’s “Ease of doing business” index.

In the United Kingdom be on time for your meetings and thorough in your presentations. A “business plan” in English is a must, even if only brief. Business is a serious matter in the United Kingdom but this does not mean that there is no room for humour to relax the atmosphere. It is, in fact, recommended!

It is best to have documentation/brochures in English (do not expect your contact partner to speak French) and to confirm your discussions in writing.
Strengthen your business relationships with appropriate contracts. Do not hesitate to seek advice from professionals in the sector. Naturally, it is important to know the difference between the English and the British so as to not offend any potential Scottish, Welsh or Irish contact partners.


Means of Payment & Banking Specificities

The pricing of transactions is systematic and within a narrow range among the institutions in the market (account management fees, paperwork costs). Banking services are very competitive and services offered and quality is based on client relationships. Internet banking services (at the domestic and international level) are very widely used and strongly recommended.

For your commercial payments, avoid cheques. They are rarely used and offer little security to their recipients. There is no penalty for issuing an uncovered cheque, as a result cheques should be avoided.

Cheque cancellations can be carried out by a simple request to the issuer, regardless of the reason. As a result, you should demand a Swift transfer.
