The Crédit Agricole Group is present in Argentina through a representative office of Crédit Agricole CIB.
The International Desk Latin America, based in São Paulo, Brazil, supports corporate customers in Argentina through the Group's entities and two banking partners, Banco Supervielle and Santander, and occasionally through the Galicia and BBVA banks.
General
Doing business in Argentina usually involves establishing a trusting relationship between people beforehand: this takes time and may justify using a local intermediary for an introduction. It is good not to put too much pressure on Argentina's interlocutors in trade negotiations. It is recommended to use a little Spanish in the exchanges. Finally, do not neglect the titles of your interlocutors (doctor, engineer, etc.).
The business environment remains uncertain: the judiciary is independent, but with heavy interference, and the government intervenes in many places, without much clarity.
The business climate has deteriorated sharply due to the severe crisis and the legal and regulatory unpredictability that are holding back private investment. The lack of predictability and reliability is a major constraint on attracting new foreign investments, including for the large French multinationals present historically, which have to face challenges such as raising currencies to the parent companies through atypical solutions.
Investment - growth sectors
The major opportunities focus on natural resources and extraction activities: oil and gas, renewable energies (wind/solar/green hydrogen) and lithium. The country’s strategy is to become a major energy exporter, reducing dependence on agricultural exports.
Apart from extraction activities, Argentina remains a major agricultural power (major producer and exporter of grains and meat). There are opportunities for innovative start-ups and companies to provide biotech and greener solutions (fertilizers, biologics, seeds, soil treatment, etc.)
Payment methods & specific banking features
The most widely used payment instrument is international transfer, followed by documentary remittances and letters of credit, although to a lesser extent. The current context of dollar shortages and foreign exchange controls must be carefully considered, which can lead to considerable settlement delays.
Documentary credit remains an option to secure imports with payment according to the rules in force. However, given the country risk, there are few banks that will confirm this. Crédit Agricole, for example, has frozen all these lines to Argentina.
In short, Argentina is a very complicated country, in particular with the difficulty of repatriating funds or getting paid. This must be taken into account for any business plan. See PAI Latin America for more information.
